Class Descriptions
Studio on the Hill offers a great variety of dance, tumbling, and ballet classes. This year, Studio on the Hill has implemented a dress code for all classes. Please take a look at the course descriptions and the current dress codes.
Mommy & Me (ages 18 months - 2 years)
An interactive class for toddlers and moms,
dads, grandparents, or caregivers. Share those special smiles and hugs in our
class! Songs & exercises based on dance and gymnastics fundamentals –
specifically designed for each age group, incorporating skills and rhythm
exercises. Share the moments!
Three-Dimensional
Learning
BODY! Increased physical strength and muscle control, fine and gross motor skill development, coordination, balance
BRAIN! Spatial and perceptual awareness, introduction to
colors, language development and self-expression. Fun themes & age appropriate stories are
used to engage students.
SCHOOL SKILLS! Developing independence and feeling comfortable away
from parents, early socialization, sharing and taking turns, accepting new environments, following directions and
cooperating
THE PARENT’S
ROLE:
In
these classes, the parent/caregiver of the student is assigned the task of
playing with, supervising, observing and guiding their child through the
learning and play activities provided by the teacher.
FREQUENTLY VOICED CONCERN:
My
child is very (shy, aggressive, active, clumsy, sensitive, etc.) and I’m
concerned there will be a problem.
Each parent is responsible for the attentive supervision of
their own child and watching out for the well-being of all children. If
you have a concern about your child’s temperament or development, you will want
to be extra vigilant; teaching, interacting and preventing throughout the
class. Please discuss your concerns with the teacher for help and
support.

Tot Tumbling (ages 2 - 3 years)
This
growing class is for children ages 2 and up. Students will be independent on
the mat as often as possible. Students will be introduced to tumbling basics
through a progressive approach with each skill building on the next. Students
will also experience dance through creative movement & beginning steps.
Three-Dimensional Learning

Elementary Ballet
Students will learn ballet positions and proper terminology of positions and moves as well as flexibility and strength conditioning to support the rigorous demands of dance. This class will include barre work, center work and across the floor, with an emphasis on body alignment and execution of techniques.
Dress code for this class is leotard, tights and either jazz or ballet shoes. Booty shorts and/or dance skirt over leotard is permissible. Hair must be in a bun, out of face and off the neck. Pink tights and ballet shoes will be used for the recital.
Jr. High and High School Ballet
Students will learn ballet positions and proper terminology of positions and moves as well as flexibility and strength conditioning to support the rigorous demands of dance. This class will include barre work, center work and across the floor, with an emphasis on body alignment and execution of techniques.
Dress code for this class is leotard, tights and either jazz or ballet shoes. Booty shorts and/or dance skirt over leotard is permissible. Hair must be in a bun, out of face and off the neck. Pink tights and ballet shoes will be used for the recital.
Elementary Jazz
Students will engage in intensive strengthening warm ups and stretching techniques to elongate and encourage muscle strength. They will work on across the floor movements, leaps, turns and center combination work. A great focus will be on terminology, visual changes in strength and flexibility and a great appreciated for the dance form.
Dress code for this class is jazz pants, form fitting tops and jazz shoes. No mid drifts. Shorts are permissible. Booty shorts may be worn as long as tights or bike length shorts are worn under. Hair must be out of face. Tan jazz shoes will be used for the recital.
Jr. High Jazz

Tumbling 1
No experience necessary. This beginner class will teach the basic fundamentals of tumbling. Students in this class will work on basic progressions: forward rolls, backward rolls, headstands, handstands, handstand drills, cartwheels and round-offs. Strength and flexibility will be a focus of each class and staff will assist each student with hands on spotting techniques to ensure proper body alignment and muscle memory.
Dress code for this class is leotard with shorts over it, or bike length unitard. Hair must be pulled back securely and off of the neck.
Tumbling 2
Students must be able to do a standing back bend to enroll in this class. This class is geared for students who have mastered the basic tumbling skills (Level 1) and be ready to move on. The level 2 tumbling class will require students to know all of the level 1 beginner skills so that focus can be placed on teaching new skills such as: dive rolls, limbers, kick over, front and back walkovers, and jumping approach into a round-off. Strength, conditioning, and flexibility will also be emphasized in each session. Participants must have all level 2 skills to progress to a level 3 tumbling class.
Dress code for this class is leotard with shorts over it, or bike length unitard. Hair must be pulled back securely and off of the neck.
Tumbling 3
Students must be able to perform a front and back walkover and have mastered the level 1 and level 1 skills requirements. This class will focus on front and back handsprings, round-off combinations, standing back handspring connections and straight jump tumbling combinations, standing multiple back handspring and from round-off. Equipment and staff spotting stations will be used for the instruction of back handspring and front handsprings. Students must have all level 1 - 3 skills to progress to level 4 tumbling class.
Dress code for this class is leotard with shorts over it, or bike length unitard. Hair must be pulled back securely and off of the neck.
Tumbling 4
Students must be able to perform a standing back handspring without assistance. this class will introduce combination tumbling, back handspring step out and tumbling connections, and begin to work progressions towards the back tuck, front tuck, aerial cartwheel, and aerial walkover. This class will also work on perfecting the standing back tuck, round-off back tuck, and combinations using those skills.
Dress code for this class is leotard with shorts over it, or bike length unitard. Hair must be pulled back securely and off of the neck.
Urban Jazz
This dance style combines jazz dance technique with hip top. This style of dance emphasizes the upper body isolation and the use of deep plie, along with some floor and partner work. This class is fun and upbeat for the student who is ready to let loose.
Dress code for this class is jazz tennis shoes, and sports wear - baggy pants preferred.
Elementary Hip Hop
Fast paced choreography based creative movement class for elementary aged students . Students will learn street and performance style hip hop moves.
Dress code for this class is comfortable clothing, no jeans, P.E. type attire is acceptable.
Hip Hop (ages 10 and up)
Fast paced choreography based creative movement class. Students will learn tutting, popping, locking, as well as other street and performance style hip hop moves.
Dress code for this class is comfortable clothing, no jeans. P.E. type attire is acceptable.
